I sadly hear too often "I did not like my hospital lactation nurse or staff person". Why is this ladies? What have your experiences been and what would you have liked to have seen done differently?
Were they too rough, did they not come soon enough, often enough? Did you feel like they left out some important information that would have made all the difference once you got home?
Share with me your thoughts, experiences both good and not so good.

Reducing Childhood Obesity- Show me the breast
Most of us are well aware of most of the benefits of breastmilk for the child that is currently at the breast feeding. Did you know there are benefits that go way beyond those months, years as well?
Breastfed babies are a lower risk for childhood obesity, something society does a darn good job at fostering.
Check out this article.

Reflections on Breastfeeding
I love this video. It speaks volumes about what breastfeeding means to women.
Take a look and share with me some of your own reflections, the good the bad and the good again!

and if that one did not make you cry, this one might.

Skype- New Ways to Connect
Skype is gaining popularity with the medical world along with many other businesses. A lactation support store and business in California regularly uses Skype to speak with clients that are either too far from the store or due to lack of transportation can't get to see the LC's in person. This is a great resource, especially for Mom's that need support at 2am and it's just not possible for me to get to them or them to get to me.
Keep this in mind as an option for Mom's who are also living in rural communities and as a way of saving time and money could still get some face time when they are faced with poor latch or other challenges that they may encounter with their babies.

Here We Go!!!
Good Morning Mama's!
This has been a long time coming for me. When I had my first baby about 7 years ago, friends of mine joked that I needed a business card that listed all the things I did on it. One of those was breastfeeding support and education. I have always been passionate about breastfeeding, but more than that, I am passionate about education and awareness of breastfeeding and it's benefits. It's also very important to me that every mother I work with understands the challenges of breastfeeding and that in some cases after dedication, exhaustion and all the education and support in the world, breastfeeding does not work. I want those Mom's to know they gave it their best shot and that it's ok to say "this is not going to work for me". I won't however say it's ok if you did not even give you and your baby a shot at making the best choice you can regarding feeding your baby. It's important that you know where I am coming from. I won't judge, but I believe every Mother is given this gift and should at least try sharing it.
I hope to share here, some great resources and current thinking around breastfeeding. I hope to spread the word through friends and mom's groups I am a part of, that I have finally gotten myself together and I am in a place in my life where I can devote more time to educating and supporting Mom's who would like to breastfeed.
It's important that anyone I work with know that I am not an IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Counselor). I have a scope of practice that I work within and if a Mom I am working with is dealing with medical challenges, a baby that is not thriving or any other complications that I would deem beyond my scope of practice I will refer that Mom to a local IBCLC or their own MD. My job is to educate, advocate and support successful breastfeeding. You will also notice that fees for my services are lower than that of an IBCLC, that is specifically because I can't treat or diagnose illness, high risk mothers and babies.
A Mother's Benediction, A Mother's Blessing, isn't this what every child is to his or her Mother?
Share this journey with me, share it with others. I love what I do and I love meeting new people! I believe strongly in building support teams around a new Mother, a new Father and the families that their child will join once it's born. There is not much we can do all alone and parenting is one that we could use and will take all the support that is offered.
